What is Alienne about?

A rollicking parody of a timeless classic, Alienne transports Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid into a wacky world of outer space. The heroine, Alienne, is a spunky Martian teenager who boldly opposes the prevailing Martian attitude that human feelings and human failings are signs of weakness. In fact, she secretly longs to be an Earthling herself, and soon gets her wish, but only after promising her soul to the evil space witch, Earthsula. Alienne’s quirky musical journey ultimately teaches all the space creatures (and their human audience) a valuable lesson about tolerance, empathy, and the merits of learning from one’s mistakes.

How did Alienne come to be?

Alienne was created by composer/author Jim Colleran. After working for years as a music teacher and arts educator, Jim noticed that many of his students, with their hectic schedules and planned itineraries, seemed increasingly concerned with attaining “perfection.” Many of them were terrified of making a mistake. Knowing that we only grow when we’re willing to risk failure, Jim wrote a brief cautionary tale, set in outer space, celebrating the joy of making mistakes.

That early version, with a different structure and title, was performed by a cast of twenty middle school students at Kidstock Theater in Winchester, MA. Years later, a five-actor version was workshopped at Allegro Theater in New Jersey. Now, with several brand new songs and a new seven-actor script, Alienne: The Musical Adventures of My Little Martian will make its world premiere as part of FringeJR at the New York International Fringe Festival!
